Trees and Plants Growing Out of Solid Rock-An Oddity of Nature
An Oddity of Nature Where a Tree and Plants Grow From Solid Rock
Trees and Plants Growing Out of Solid Rock-An Oddity of Nature . I find this tree an oddity of nature, growing from solid rock we call the "Tree of Life" . This tree has been at our summer cottage for centuries. Ever since anyone can remember this tree has grown from and been unhindered by it's rocky terrain. We call this tree "the Tree of Life". Many plants also grow from the rock in this area certainly an oddity. How can a seed spread by the wind, a bird, or other mean grow from rock?
This is something that I really can't explain but it is really quite common place in rocky terrain. Generally speaking tree have always grown in places like this and people have wondered and looked at them in awe. For us this has always been a place to go to be alone, read a book, or just relax. We love this place and each of us has our own special memories of this tree and the peace it seems to bring.
Over the years we have also discovered that it is only place on our little remote Canadian Island where cell phone reception is good. So now many of us go to this spot to make important phone calls without having our signal dropped. I'm sure as time goes on the generations to follow will find this place and enjoy the peace and quite. The only sounds heard here are song birds and an occasional chipmunk.
Diving From the Rocks
Cliff Diving Trees and Rocks
In this photo you can see one of out favorite summer time pass times. Cliff diving from high above the chilly waters of the St. Mary's river. From the time our family owned this property the children and the adults have climbed this treed rock to test their skills and courage on what they affectionately call "cliff diving rock". My older grand daughter is about to take a leap from our age old rock.
It is also a sport of the older generation, we test our stupidity and bodies each year time and time again. Many of us are far too old in my opinion for the challenge. This doesn't stop anyone who wants to from diving off into the deep cold water.
You can see in the background of this photo the rock surrounding the entire terrain of this paradise. I often say it one of the few places in the world where you can stand in two elevations at the same time. Most of the properties here have very little flat areas for recreation. We laid down a large areas of crushed granite so the kids would have a place to play and we would have more parking. Planting of course is done in containers, since there is only rock left from the glaciers all around.
It not a very big tree

Blueberry Hill
Picking Blueberries from the Rock - Lots of blueberry bushes
I've traveled across the country and encounter a number of oddities in nature. Some in the mountains, the desert and under the sea. Every one as odd a our little "tree of life". However, we also have wild blueberry bushes with loads of blueberries growing from the same rock as our tree. It is amazing to see and the grandchild love picking blueberries for pancakes and muffins during the summer when they visit. In the photo you can see one of our little ones picking her share of blueberries.
Each year for the decades we have watched our tree and plants grow from our rocky terrain in Northern Ontario, Canada. Over those years our tree has managed to survive, although it never seems to get any taller. I suppose the nutrient source comes from blown leaves and debris trapped in the crevices of the rock. Since it snows in abundance here in Canada the seasonal melt nourishes our little tree with water.
However, nature works for this little tree and has kept it alive throughout our families history. My mother-in-law used to tell me stories about how she and her siblings would climb to the top of the rock and sit by the tree back in the 1930's. They too called it the "tree of life. We will pass this place to our children, just as it was passed to us by the generations before us. The "tree of life" will hopefully survive for many more generations to see it growing from it's rocky perch high on top of the rocks.
